To Do With Dad

Share

Sunday is Father’s Day, but that doesn’t mean you can’t treat Dad to a whole weekend full of fun.

Friday

Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn would have loved it. Dad will too. Get out of the city early and head east to Huck Finn’s Jubilee, a turn-of-the-century river festival on 500 acres of parkland in Victorville. There’s something for everyone, from river raft building to egg-tossing contests to live country and bluegrass music. The jubilee kicks off with a fishing derby 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday ($3 to enter) and continues all weekend with a big-top circus, crafts, a barbecue, the California Arm Wrestling Championships, a mountain man encampment, river contests and more. Friday and Saturday, 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.; Sunday, 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Country music singer Ricky Skaggs performs Sunday beginning at 6 p.m. Adults, $8 each day; juniors (ages 6 to 11), $4; children under 6, free. Mojave Narrows Regional Park, south of Victorville. Exit Interstate 15 at Bear Valley Road. Go east four miles to Ridgecrest Avenue, turn north and go three miles to the park. (909) 780-8810.

If Dad likes country music but not the wilderness, Santa Anita Park’s Big Hoss Dance Hall and Saloon opens for its sixth season Friday. The outdoor saloon offers live music, a barbecue, bar and country and western dancing on three dance floors. This weekend’s musical entertainment comes from Runnin’ Kind. Free line dancing lessons are offered beginning at 7:30 p.m. Hours: 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays through Labor Day. All ages, $4. Parking, $3. Admission includes access to racetrack, which features simulcast wagering on Hollywood Park’s thoroughbred racing Friday nights. Santa Anita Park is south of the 210 Freeway in Arcadia. Exit Santa Anita Avenue, turn right onto Huntington Drive and enter parking lot through Gate 5. (626) 574-6400.

Saturday

Just a sea gull’s flight over Rainbow Harbor from the grand opening of the Long Beach aquarium, Shoreline Village rings in the summer season with its annual Shoreline Jubilee and Chowder Cook-Off on Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. You and Dad can indulge in free tastes beginning at noon and help determine who makes the best chowder in Long Beach. Sunday, there will be contests, giveaways, scavenger hunts and live music from the calypso band Sounds of Paradise and Irish folk band Atlantic Crossing, noon to 5 p.m. Free. Shoreline Village, foot of the 710 Freeway in downtown Long Beach. (562) 435-2668.

For dads who crave danger, the Nuart’s “Kiss Kiss, Bang! Bang! Festival” is a saucy one-week series of sexy (and sometimes comical) spy thrillers. This weekend’s offerings: “The Silencers” and “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery” on Friday, a James Bond double-feature of “Goldfinger” and “From Russia With Love” on Saturday and “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” and “The Assassination Bureau” on Sunday. 11272 Santa Monica Blvd. (310) 478-6379 for show times. See page 10.

Nearby on Olvera Street, philip’s BALDWiLD cabaret and Casa de Sousa present a “POP-o-rama” at 2 p.m. Poets, musicians, performers and visitors are invited to read or perform for their fathers or about fatherhood. W-34 Olvera St. (888) BALD-WILD.
