Three people on a Chicago-bound commuter train were crushed to death by a steel coil when the train hit a truck at a crossing in Portage, Ind., police said. The engineer made a desperate attempt to herd passengers to the rear of the train after applying the emergency brakes. The predawn crash also injured four passengers. In the collision, a steel coil weighing several tons dislodged from the truck, crashed into the first car of the train, crushing a railroad employee and two commuters.
