The charred body of a man was found Friday by a passerby in a remote section of Palmdale, authorities said.

A resident of the area spotted the body under a train trestle while walking his dog near a rock quarry at 62nd Street East and Avenue T about 9:30 a.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Cruz Solis.

The identity of the man was not known, but authorities said the clothing and physical description do not match that of a sheriff’s deputy missing since June 11. The deputy failed to return from a daylong hike in Devils Punchbowl Park.

The body is that of a man about 5 feet 8 to 5 feet 10 inches tall who weighed about 140 to 160 pounds, authorities said. The man was wearing blue jeans, a navy blue golf shirt and distinctive jewelry.

How long the man had been dead and the cause of death will be determined through an autopsy, Solis said. Detectives are searching for people who have been in the area in the last several days to help authorities pinpoint a time when the man died.

It is not known whether the man was killed there or whether he died elsewhere and his body was dumped at the scene, authorities said.
