Netherlands vs. South Korea

* ABOUT BELGIUM: Coach Georges Leekens will start midfielder Enzo Scifo in place of defensive-minded Philippe Clement in an effort to add creativity to his team’s offense. Belgium played a scoreless draw with the Netherlands in its opener.

* ABOUT MEXICO: Mexico rallied to defeat South Korea, 3-1, in impressive fashion in its opener, fueled by two goals by striker Luis Hernandez.

* OUTLOOK: Belgium was far too defense-oriented against the Netherlands and must add vigor to its offense. Scifo, who can hold on to the ball well, should help. Mexico, which has the only victory in the group, looked solid in its opener and will provide a rigorous test for a physical Belgian defense.

Helene Elliott was with the Los Angeles Times’ Sports department from 1989 to 2024, first as a staff writer and then, starting in 2006, as a columnist. She became the first female journalist to be honored with a plaque in the Hall of Fame of a major professional sport as the 2005 winner of the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Elmer Ferguson Award, awarded to writers “who have brought honor to journalism and to hockey.” A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and graduate of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, she has covered 18 Olympics.
