Club established: The franchise moved to Lake Elsinore from Palm Springs after the 1993 season.

Affiliation: The Angels’ Class A team.

Ownership: Mandalay Sports Enterprises, an entertainment group that also owns minor league baseball and hockey teams in Las Vegas. Managing director is Ken Stickney, the Storm’s original owner, who purchased the team after the 1991 season.

Manager: Mario Mendoza, perhaps best known for the “Mendoza Line” (a .200 batting average), which was named after him. He was considered one of the finest fielding shortstops in the majors during the 1970s. This is his seventh year as a manager in the Angels’ farm system. Last year he managed the Cedar Rapids Kernels in the Class A Midwest League.

Top current prospect: Shortstop Nelson Castro, from the Dominican Republic, has above-average arm strength, running speed and bat speed. Blossomed on offense in 1997, when he batted .294 with seven home runs, 37 runs batted in and 26 stolen bases.

Most famous alumni: Current Angel first baseman Darin Erstad, second baseman Justin Baughman and starting pitcher Jarrod Washburn. The Storm has retired the uniform numbers of Angel catcher Todd Greene, who is on the disabled list, and third baseman George Arias, who is with the Padres’ triple-A team in Las Vegas.

Home stadium: The Lake Elsinore Diamond, built in 1994 to blend old and new elements of baseball with a 36-foot-high right-field wall to resemble Fenway Park’s Green Monster, and a brick exterior like Baltimore’s Camden Yards. Seats 6,066.

Lake Elsinore baseball history: Lake Elsinore has the league’s top eight attendance figures. The most recent record was set last July 5 when 8,357 watched a game. Lake Elsinore is also where the Angels send their players on rehab assignments. Chuck Finley, Jim Edmonds and Troy Percival have made appearances there in recent seasons.

Lake Elsinore is famous for recreational water sports and world-class skydiving. The region, which includes Temecula and Murrieta, is also known for its wineries and wine tasting.
