Labor Talks Break Off After Only 30 Minutes

Talks between the NBA and the players’ union broke off Monday in New York after only 30 minutes, and no new sessions are scheduled before the expiration of the labor agreement at midnight, June 30.

A lockout is expected on July 1.

After Phil Jackson’s departure as coach of the Chicago Bulls, Michael Jordan, without directly addressing whether he would play for another coach, said his teammates would have to stay for him to put off retirement. “I hope Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman will come back,” said Jordan in Austin, Texas. “It will take some time for them to think about it, but I think there’s a chance they will.” . . . Utah Jazz forward Karl Malone received the Henry P. Iba Citizen Athlete Award in Tulsa, Okla., for using his sports fame to help others.
