CHP Chopper Base Dedicated

Two California Highway Patrol helicopters that cover Orange and Los Angeles counties moved this week to the Fullerton Municipal Airport--their new home base.

Government officials, pilots and business leaders Wednesday welcomed the 11-member crew that will be stationed at the airport with proclamations, handshakes and plaques.

The CHP is occupying a portion of a new 29,400-square-foot hangar that officially opened Wednesday.

The $1.2-million hangar was funded by General Aviation Co., which leases a portion of the airport from the city and rents out the space to the CHP for $8,500 a month.

The airport already is the base for Orange County Fire Authority choppers.

With the CHP on board, Fullerton residents will feel safer, officials said.

“Our business districts and residential neighborhoods certainly will be enhanced by an added level of protection to augment Fullerton’s already high professional standard for public safety,” said Gail S. Dixon, president of the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce.
