Lamb Goes In Like Lion at Rochester

David Lamb (Newbury Park High) singled twice and drove in a run during his triple-A debut Friday night for the Rochester Red Wings, the Baltimore Orioles’ top affiliate.

Lamb, who batted .303 for double-A Bowie, was promoted Thursday after Rochester released Mitch Simons.

Lamb, the only original Oriole draft pick on the Red Wings’ 23-man roster, became the 43rd player used by the club.

Three players from the region were honored by Topps and the National Assn. of Professional Baseball Leagues as their leagues’ players of the month for May.

Torey Lovullo (Montclair Prep) received the International League honor after batting .333 with three home runs and 13 runs batted in for Buffalo (Indians).

Lovullo, playing for his sixth organization, also received the International League award in 1992 while playing for Columbus (Yankees).

Lovullo was selected to the International League roster for the triple-A all-star game, to be played July 8 at Norfolk.

Pitcher Josh Towers (Hueneme) took the Carolina League honor after going 5-0 and striking out 30 in 37 1/3 innings for Frederick (Orioles). He did not walk a batter in May.

Brendan Kingman of the Lancaster JetHawks won in the California League after collecting 43 hits in 26 games.

Steve Sisco (Thousand Oaks High) was chosen the Pacific Coast League’s player of the week for June 14-20, when he went 11 for 22 with five home runs and 13 RBIs for Omaha (Royals). . . . Mike Rossiter (Burroughs High) was promoted to triple-A Las Vegas by the San Diego Padres Wednesday. Rossiter, who was 2-0 with a 1.79 earned-run average for double-A Mobile, pitched two no-hit innings of relief against Tucson Friday night. . . .

Rob Crabtree (Cal State Northridge) was promoted by the San Francisco Giants to double-A Shreveport on Friday. The right-handed reliever, who was 6-1 with a 0.99 ERA for Class-A San Jose, replaces Jeff Martin, who retired last week. . . .

Gabe Kapler (Taft High, Moorpark College) was selected the most valuable player of the double-A Southern League all-star game on Monday night. Kapler, of the Jacksonville Suns (Tigers), had a two-run double for the Southern League in a 6-4 victory over Mobile, the host team. David Newhan (Pepperdine) homered for Mobile (Padres).
