Race-Related Brawls at Jail Injure 21 Inmates
Twenty-one county jail inmates suffered minor injuries Sunday during two separate race-related brawls at the North County Correctional Facility, authorities said.
The fights, involving about 100 African American and Latino inmates, erupted within five minutes of each other shortly after 8:30 a.m., said Sgt. David Halm, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesman.
No weapons were used during either of the brawls, which occurred in different sections of the jail in the 29300 block of The Old Road, Halm said. No deputies were injured.
Deputies were able to quell the first disturbance by using commands, Halm said.
A “sting ball”--a rubber projectile fired in lieu of bullets--was used to break up the second fight, he said.
Halm said 13 inmates were treated for minor cuts and abrasions. Eight others sustained injuries that did not require treatment.
