Council OKs $5,000 for Park Merger Study
An unusual proposal to combine and connect parks and open space in Costa Mesa, Newport Beach and Huntington Beach cleared a major hurdle Monday evening.
Following the lead of Newport Beach and Huntington Beach, the Costa Mesa City Council approved $5,000 toward a feasibility study to determine whether parkland here should be combined into a larger plan called Orange Coast River Park.
Supporters of the park say it would link trails at Fairview and Canyon parks in Costa Mesa with open space in the two neighboring coastal cities and on county land. Advantages include a cohesive vision for parkland in the central, coastal part of Orange County and a better chance of receiving state and federal grants based on size and related issues.
Friends of Harbors, Beaches and Parks, a community group based in Newport Beach, is behind the proposal and will commission the study.
Each of the three cities has approved $5,000. The county is considering whether to donate $10,000.
