Anthony Taylor scored 22 points and Wally Szczerbiak added 18 as Miami of Ohio won its second game for its ailing coach with a 64-59 victory over Kent in a Mid-American Conference semifinal Tuesday night.

The seventh-seeded RedHawks (16-11) will meet fourth-seeded Eastern Michigan in Wednesday night’s championship game. Eastern got 35 points from Earl Boykins and 31 from Derrick Dial in a dramatic 93-92 overtime victory over top-seeded Ball State.

John Estick added 11 points and 10 rebounds for Miami.

Nate Meers scored 19 points, John Whorton 14 and Ed Norvell 10 points for sixth-seeded Kent (13-17), which was making its first appearance in the semifinals since 1989.

In Saturday’s quarterfinal at Western Michigan, Miami Coach Charlie Coles suffered a heart attack in the first half. Emergency personnel worked on him for 20 minutes on the court and the game was resumed only after Miami’s players voted to continue after a two-hour delay--with Miami pulling out a 67-63 victory over second-seeded Western.

Coles remains in a Kalamazoo, Mich., hospital, in serious but stable condition. He is expected to remain in the hospital another few days.

Taking his place on the RedHawk bench was assistant Ray Martin.

The RedHawks led, 31-23, at halftime, then reeled off the first seven points of the second half--four by Taylor--to build a 38-23 advantage.
