A carelessly placed cigarette is blamed for starting a house fire Thursday morning, causing $35,000 in damage, authorities said.

The fire, which began around 9:20 a.m. at 906 El Camino Corto, was reported by a passerby to crews at a fire station on La Luna Avenue, a block and a half away, according to a Ventura County Fire Department spokeswoman.

Crews knocked down the fire within minutes, but not before Robert Baskin’s home sustained $20,000 in structural damage and $15,000 in damage to contents. Baskin was not home at the time.

There were no smoke alarms in the home, the spokeswoman said.
