Vento’s Grand Slam Propels Santa Ana Past OCC

Michael Vento hit a grand slam in the top of the sixth to erase a two-run deficit and lead Santa Ana past Orange Coast, 8-4, in an Orange Empire Conference baseball game Thursday at Orange Coast.

The Dons (19-3, 6-2 in conference) scored all their runs on four home runs. Chad Elliot and Shaun Wooley each hit home runs and Joe Urban hit a two-run home run for Santa Ana.

Jon Fenoglio had two hits for Orange Coast (9-10, 2-6), which took the lead, 4-2, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth before Santa Ana rallied in the sixth.

Greg Young (4-0) pitched six innings to earn the victory for Santa Ana.

In another Orange Empire Conference game:

Cypress 3, Saddleback 0--Cypress’ Steve Smyth struck out 11 batters and gave up only four hits as he picked up his sixth victory in as many starts for host Cypress (12-9, 5-3).

Catcher Brandon Pack (2-4) hit a home run and scored two runs for the Chargers.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s tennis:

Saddleback 6 1/2, Orange Coast 1 1/2--Erika Dommeyer won in singles, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, for Saddleback (7-1). Orange Coast is now 6-3-1.
