The Force-Fed View

Share

I love this comment from the American Family Assn.’s Tim Wildmon regarding Ellen DeGeneres’ show: “You felt like you were being force-fed her version of morality” (“Ratings, Not Sexuality, Steer Future of ‘Ellen,’ ” by Brian Lowry, March 11).

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. I guess if anyone knows anything about force-feeding morality, it’s someone who “disapproves” of other people’s personal business and tries to get quality shows like “NYPD Blue” kicked off the air because they don’t square with his limited and sharply out-of-focus worldview.

I think “Ellen” is less racy now than before she came out. We’ve yet to see Ellen and her girlfriend being sexual, while a couple of seasons ago we had Paige and Spence at a crowded Dodger Stadium having sex under a blanket with a game in progress. In Television Land, heterosexuals can pretty much do anything they want, while homosexuals have to fight for the right simply to exist. Whaddya know, art does imitate life after all.

One of the most successful and beloved series in TV history centered on an inter-ethnic married couple, a seemingly “controversial” setup. The real-life couple and the TV couple were one and the same. Yes, the execs wanted to kick the Cuban guy off the show, fearing his ethnic origin would lead to the series’ demise, but they chose to stick with the original arrangement. A good move, for who could fathom a world sans “I Love Lucy”?

With a little creative restructuring, open-mindedness and risk, ABC could continue to utilize “Ellen” as the asset it is instead of trying to replace it with another heterosexist, Gen-X, “Friends”-esque piece of audiovisual swill.

So “Ellen” is temporarily being replaced by a show called “Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place.” That says it all.
