Recognizing her efforts to help people become educated and employed, the state Legislature will honor Valley College President Tyree Wieder on Monday as the 40th Assembly District’s Woman of the Year.

Wieder, 51, serves on numerous state commissions and is involved in community organizations, in addition to leading the community college. Her work impressed Assemblyman Bob Hertzberg (D-Sherman Oaks), who plans to propose a resolution Monday calling for the Assembly to honor Wieder.

“Sometimes people don’t know how valuable their service can be to the community,” said Miriam Jaffe, an aide to Hertzberg. “Dr. Wieder does. She gets it.”

Wieder has ties to organizations including the Valley Industry and Commerce Assn., Economic Alliance of the San Fernando Valley, Mid Valley Chamber of Commerce, San Fernando Valley Family and Community Commission and the Los Angeles Police Department’s Community Forum.

She places much of her energy into generating education and employment opportunities in the San Fernando Valley.

“We need to get people educated and put them to work,” she said. “There is a lot of room for improvement in both those areas.”
