Kaufman & Broad Still No. 1

The race is getting closer, but Kaufman & Broad Home Corp. is the Southland’s largest home builder for the fifth year in a row, according to The Times’ 27th annual Survey of Residential Building in Southern California.

K & B built 2,117 single-family homes, 179 apartments and 44 condos in Southern California in 1997, generating $409 million in revenue.

The No. 2 builder, Lennar Homes, built 1,296 houses and reported revenue of $374.9 million, only $34.1 million behind K & B. Last year’s No. 2, Pardee, was $148.3 million behind K & B.

A total of 90 companies participated in the voluntary survey of home-building in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Ventura, Santa Barbara and Kern counties.
