Grubaugh Keys Canyon’s Win

Josh Grubaugh’s two-run triple highlighted a three-run fourth inning for Canyon, which went on to defeat Fountain Valley, 3-2, in the championship game of the Loara tournament Saturday at Glover Stadium.

Tommy Duarte led off the fourth with a double, Brian Dane walked, then Grubaugh followed with a triple to tie the score, 2-2. Grubaugh then came home on a wild pitch. Aaron Bryan (2-0) allowed two runs and four hits over six innings to earn the victory for Canyon (5-0).

In the third-place game:

Edison 3, Loara 2--Andrew Rodriguez (2-0) went the distance for Edison, striking out nine in the third-place game. Tony Cappuccilli had a two-run homer in the first inning for the Chargers (4-1). Loara fell to 3-2.

In other Loara tournament games:

Dana Hills 3, Marina 2--Dana Hills’ Chris Weber drove in the winning run in the seventh with a single to center field that scored Parker Jarvis. El Toro 14, Kennedy 0 (5, mercy)--Senior Blair Lucas hit a grand slam to highlight a 13-run first inning by the Chargers in the consolation championship. Clemente Bonilla tripled and singled, Lucas homered and singled, and Colin Stilz doubled twice for El Toro (4-1).

Katella 3, Savanna 2--Scott Fraser’s fifth-inning single drove in pinch runner Art Tiscareno with the winning run as the Saxons held on to defeat Savanna.

Savanna (1-4) rallied for two runs in the sixth off Katella (2-3) starter Alex Mejia, but he closed out the Rebels for his first victory of the year.

Laguna Hills 5, Irvine 4--Jeremy Miller’s double in the bottom of the sixth inning drove in Nino Cordoves to give Laguna Hills a one-run lead. Servite 3, Santa Margarita 1--Ben Francisco led off the third inning with a home run and Brian Wolfe gave up four hits and struck out eight for the Friars.

University 10, Ocean View 8--Brian Yoder had three hits, two runs and two RBIs for University (3-2). Jason Martini hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning and a grand slam in the seventh for Ocean View (2-3).

In the Costa Mesa tournament:

Mission Viejo 11, Costa Mesa 3--Chris Wilmer’s two-out single in the fifth inning gave the Diablos a 3-2 lead and Mission Viejo (3-1) added eight runs in the championship game.

Corte Gaspar hit a three-run home run. Dan Kessel struck out seven and walked none for his second win. Chris Distino also was four for four and scored four runs for Mission Viejo.

Laguna Beach 3, Santa Ana 2--Aaron Skinner had two hits, two stolen bases and scored twice and Mike Labeda doubled to drive in the winning run for Laguna Beach (3-1) in the third-place game.

Los Amigos 9, Bolsa Grande 2--Rodrigo Contreras drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double in the second inning for Los Amigos (3-1). In the Glendora tournament:

Fullerton 5, La Crescenta Crescenta Valley 1--Armando Lopez had one hit and two RBIs as Fullerton (4-0) won the Glendora tournament title for the first time in 20 years.

In the Newport Elks tournament:

Corona del Mar 6, Capistrano Valley 4--Matt Larson (1-1) earned the consolation victory for Corona del Mar (3-1), helping his cause with his third home run of the season.

Garden Grove 5, Woodbridge 4 (8)--Phillip Marquez hit a three-run homer in the seventh to tie the score and Eric Davis’ homer in the eighth won the consolation for Garden Grove (2-2). In the North Orange County tournament:

La Quinta 7, Pico Rivera El Rancho 5--Bobby Crosby was three for four with two runs and two RBIs as La Quinta defeated El Rancho (4-1) in the championship game at Fullerton College. Teammate Gerald Laird had three hits and two runs scored. For the tournament, Laird was 11 for 16 with six RBIs and four stolen bases.

Pitcher Jason Garcia pitched five strong innings to earn his third victory of the season. Huntington Beach 12, Santa Fe Springs Santa Fe 6--Justin Whitcomb doubled, tripled and drove in two runs and Chris Brush homered and drove in three for Huntington Beach (3-2). Santa Fe is 2-3.
