A judge’s ruling that a Fullerton certified public accountant cannot run for the Republican nomination for state controller leaves San Mateo County Supervisor Ruben Barrales as the only GOP candidate in the race.

Sacramento County Superior Court Judge Ronald Robie ruled Wednesday that Snow Hume cannot run for the state office because he previously filed papers to run for auditor-controller of Orange County.

The decision removes Hume from the June primary ballot. Hume, who had been endorsed by the California Republican Assembly in his bid for state controller, said he will appeal the court’s ruling.

Barrales is the first Republican Latino candidate in a statewide race in recent California history, and he has been endorsed by California Atty. Gen. Dan Lungren, the presumptive GOP nominee for governor.

Controller Kathleen Connell, a Democrat, is seeking reelection. She faces no Democratic opposition in the primary.
