Boxing Returns to Ventura County

Share

Monthly professional boxing in Ventura County has been slow developing under fledgling promoter Robert Valdez of Oxnard. But the series returns tonight for its third program and second in three months at The Derby Club at Seaside Park.

A six-bout card featuring unheralded young fighters is headed by an eight-round main event between lightweights Eduardo Leon of Mexico and Olegario DeLeon of Monterey Park. Tony Garcia of Oxnard, 1-2 as a pro, will fight Daniel Perez of Lakewood in a four-round super-welterweight bout.

Other local fighters will include Israel Corea of Oxnard, Ramon Valle of Sun Valley and Mario Sanchez of Northridge.

Ken Dale, women’s soccer coach at Pepperdine the past three years, has resigned, associate athletic director Tim Wilhelm said Wednesday.

Wilhelm said that although the school announced Dale’s resignation Wednesday, Dale notified the school last week. Wilhelm said Pepperdine hopes to hire a replacement in the next two months.

Dale, a former coach at Moorpark College and Simi Valley High, complied a 25-29-4 record at Pepperdine. He could not be reached for comment.

Wilhelm said the coach “decided to pursue outside goals.”

Pepperdine’s best player, sophomore forward Jennifer Peterson, transferred to Arizona State in January.
