District Applies for After-School Funding
Trustees of the Santa Ana Unified School District are applying for a $2.3-million federal grant to pay for after-school learning centers at three local elementary campuses.
If the grant is approved, the money would be shared with Catholic Charities of Orange County, which would administer the after-school programs at Roosevelt, Madison and Fremont Elementary schools.
Trustee Rosemarie Avila cast the lone vote against the application, saying she favors after-school programs but opposes supporting them with federal funds.
In a separate action, the trustees applied for a grant to improve reading skills of students at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School. The one-year, $5,000 grant from Edison International would pay to place computer software and library books in classrooms.
