Defending Champions Return to Badminton Tournament

Kevin Han and Cindi Shi will defend their men’s and women’s singles titles at the U.S. Adult National Badminton Championships, scheduled Thursday through Sunday, April 5, at the Orange County Badminton Club. Both also won titles in men’s and women’s doubles.

Han and Shi, who each lives in Colorado Springs, Colo. (though Shi is from Orange) are among the 57 players expected to compete for titles in men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. More than $5,000 in cash prizes are available.

Local entrants include Stewart Carson of Orange, Mike Chansawangpuvana of Placentia, Allan Hundhausen of Santa Ana, Hoang Ly of Costa Mesa, Nick Thipsathiankul of Placentia, Cora Tu of Fullerton and Julie Yu of Fountain Valley.

The Mission Viejo Vigilantes have traded right-hander Bruce Arola to the Tri-City Posse for first baseman Graham Koonce, utility player Ryan Seidel, and right-hander Derek Valenzuela.

Arola, who came to the Vigilantes last year in the supplemental draft from Salinas, was 3-3 with a 2.56 earned-run average in 63 innings. Seidel is a former Southern California College player.

The Vigilantes will hold tryouts at Capistrano Valley High for pitchers and catchers April 11 and 17 and for position players on April 18. Prospective players should call (714) 699-1616.

Vigilantes’ spring training will also be at Capistrano Valley High, May 9-22.

Brethren Christian has hired John Bahnsen as its boys’ basketball coach.

Bahnsen will replace Doug Grove, who led the team to a 5-18 record last season. Grove is stepping down to devote more time to his family and teaching career, Athletic Director Dennis Eastman said. Bahnsen was varsity assistant at Brethren Christian for three years.
