Wendell Pickens, the first athletic director and baseball coach at Orange Coast College, has died after a long illness. He was 86.

Pickens was athletic director at the college for 29 years, beginning in 1948. He coached baseball from 1949 to 1968.

Former world champion Tom Curren of Laguna Niguel advanced with San Clemente brothers Shane and Gavin Beschen in the men’s main event of the Body Glove Surfbout XI at Lower Trestles in San Clemente.

Also advancing were Rob Machado of Cardiff, Kalani Robb of Hawaii and Scott Finn of Dana Point, who scored the top overall score of the day with 23.75 points.
