Workshops Set on Moving Works of Art

Share

In preparation for what may be one of the area’s most unusual sporting events, Paul Stimson will teach two workshops Sunday on how to build moving works of art that will be used in the city’s first Kinetic Sculpture Race.

This fall, Ventura will join the ranks of cities across the world who have hosted a sculpture race, including Boulder, Colo., and Corvallis, Ore.

“It’s a very uplifting event,” said race coordinator Riki Strandfeldt. “It challenges people’s imaginations.”

The kinetic sculpture race Oct. 10 and 11 will begin in downtown Ventura and end in Seaside Park. Competitors will take their people-powered vehicles through sand, mud and water.

According to Stimson, cost is no object in the wacky race. “It’s high adventure, low cost,” he said.

The first free workshop starts at 1 p.m., followed by another at 3 p.m. For more information, call 652-0000.
