El Toro’s Rhee Wins League Golf Title
El Toro’s Donald Rhee defeated Frank Merlo of Santa Margarita in a one-hole playoff to win the Sea View League individual golf finals Wednesday at the SCGA Members’ Club in Murrieta.
Rhee won with a par on the first hole, a 565-yard par five.
Rhee and Merlo tied with a two-day total of 147. Rhee shot two-under 70 in the second round.
Chad Towersey of Corona del Mar finished third (150) and Justin Neiman of Irvine finished fourth (154).
Santa Margarita’s Jimmy Pittenger and Innes MacDonald of Corona del Mar tied for fifth with a total of 155. Pittenger defeated MacDonald on the second playoff hole to qualify for the Southern Section individual tournament.
In the Sunset League:
Marina 193, Esperanza 202--Cory Yeats shot one-under 35 for Marina (7-9, 4-5) at El Prado’s Butterfield Ranch course. Scott Osterhout shot 36 for the Vikings.
Esperanza falls to 5-12, 2-7 in league.
In Century League tennis:
Foothill 17, Santa Ana Valley 1--John Goss swept in singles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, for Foothill (12-6, 9-1), which won a share of the league championship with Canyon, which beat Orange, 12-6.
In the Freeway League:
Sunny Hills 17, Troy 1--Joseph Kao swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for Sunny Hills (14-3, 9-0), which clinched the league championship. Second-place Troy falls to 7-2.
In the Garden Grove League:
La Quinta 12, Los Amigos 6--Robert Chu swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for La Quinta (12-3, 9-2). Los Amigos is 7-5 in league.
In the South Coast League:
Mission Viejo 11, San Clemente 7--Ali Nourbakhsh won in singles, 7-5, 6-3, 6-1 for Mission Viejo (16-2, 7-1). San Clemente falls to 5-7, 1-7.
In Garden Grove League boys’ volleyball:
La Quinta 3, Santiago 0--Anh Nguyen had seven kills for the visiting Aztecs (6-10, 6-6), which won 15-2, 15-6, 15-7. Santiago’s Jose Vidrios had 12 and Zannak Pin had five.
Pacifica 3, Bolsa Grande 0--Matt Davis had 15 kills for visiting Pacifica (8-4 in league), which tied Bolsa Grande for second in league with a 15-13, 15-7, 15-10 victory. David Nguyen had 15 kills to lead Bolsa Grande (10-6, 8-4).
In the South Coast League:
Dana Hills 3, Mission Viejo 0--David Moser led host Dana Hills with 13 kills, and Jacob Caldwell had 41 assists as the Dolphins (12-3, 8-1) won 15-7, 15-10, 15-11. The Diablos are 2-7.
