Associated Press

Ingram Micro Inc., buoyed by heated demand for the computers and technology products it distributes, has opened a $26-million expansion building in western New York that could add hundreds of jobs to that region.

The Santa Ana-based wholesale distributor, which handles products made by companies such as IBM Corp. and Microsoft, employed about 325 salespeople in western New York in 1992. The expansion building in Amherst, N.Y., gives it room for a total of 2,500 workers, though the company has not specified how many jobs may be added or when. Ingram Micro currently has 1,750 sales jobs in the western part of the state.

Ingram Micro sold $16.6 billion worth of software and equipment last year and is on track to reach analysts’ prediction of $20 billion for 1998.
