Chaminade Knocks Over Louisville, Wins Title

Call it a collision with history.

Chaminade High clinched its first league championship in 21 years Friday, defeating Louisville, 1-0, in a nine-inning Mission League game at Chaminade Middle School.

Courtney Whale scored from third base with two out in the bottom of the ninth after Lindsey Weinstein collided with Louisville second baseman Kelly Harris, who was trying to field a ground ball hit by Kaiulani Welch with the bases loaded.

The play ended an impressive duel between Maureen LeCocq of Chaminade (15-7-1, 7-0 in league play) and Stefanie Urman of Louisville (13-9, 5-3).

LeCocq (15-7) struck out 14, allowed only an eighth-inning single by Christina Jordt and faced just one batter over the minimum.

Urman (8-3), a senior, struck out five and allowed four hits for the second-place Royals.

Amy Biersch had two hits for Chaminade, ranked ninth in the region by The Times.

The Eagles last won a league title in 1977, when they were members of the Delphic League.

“I don’t know much about the past around here, but it feels great to be a part of this group,” Coach Steve Harrington said. “These girls made history.”
