San Jose’s Ronald Cerritos scored in the 80th minute Saturday night at Denver, giving the Clash a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rapids and ending its losing streak at three games.
Colorado’s Paul Bravo had tied the game in the 73rd minute. Then Cerritos took a pass from Brian Sebapole, eluded Rapid goaltender Paul Grafer and put a shot into the open net for the game-winner before 11,543.
Colorado had a chance to tie the game in the closing minutes, but Steve Trittschuh’s shot from five yards out hit the crossbar.
Jeff Baicher and Eddie Lewis added goals for the Clash.
Miami 2, Columbus 0--Dan Stebbins and Jerry Tamashiro scored on breakaways and goaltender Jeff Cassar stopped a penalty shot to give the Fusion a win before 9,010 at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
The Fusion had lost, 5-1, to the Crew three weeks ago in Columbus.
Carlos Valderrama, who will leave the Fusion for at least seven weeks to play for Colombia in the World Cup, was sharp from the kickoff, pressuring the Columbus defense with dangerous passes throughout the entire 90 minutes.
Miami won its fourth consecutive home game.
D.C. United 2, New York/New Jersey 0--Marco Etcheverry and Roy Lassiter scored for D.C. United, which won its fourth game in a row overall and extended its record at home to 6-0 before 17,027.
The MetroStars couldn’t mount any sort of attack, taking 34 minutes to register their first shot.
United goalkeeper Scott Garlick turned in his second shutout of the season. MetroStar goalkeeper Tony Meola made six saves in the first half, but had no chance on Etcheverry’s free kick from 20 yards out in the 40th minute.
United put the game away on Lassiter’s goal in the 56th minute.
