Share

The goal of this book is to help men make informed choices when faced with a diagnosis of prostate cancer. Dr. Marcus H. Loo is a respected urologist at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, and Marian Betancourt is an experienced writer of health educational materials for the public. Together, they have produced a manual that is current, straightforward and comprehensive. They cover everything from a primer on the prostate, diagnosis, risk factors, grading and staging of tumors, treatment options, post-surgical care, how to find a doctor, potency and incontinence, medical records issues, clinical trials and the Americans With Disabilities Act.

“The Diabetic Male’s Essential Guide to Living Well”

Joseph Juliano, M.D.

Henry Holt & Co.

224 pages, $25

This author of two other books on diabetes turns his attention to the special issues that affect men with the disorder. While much of the advice can apply to anyone with diabetes, Dr. Joseph Juliano may be able to reach men in a special way with his message on the importance of vigilant monitoring of the condition and the impact of positive thinking. He also discusses issues specific to men, such as male pattern baldness and impotence. Juliano’s own story is interesting. He has been diabetic for 36 years and lost his eyesight to the disease 15 years ago. Although his blindness curtailed his medical career, he has become a leading educator on the disease.
