Navy, Schools Create Engineering Program

Share

Intent on creating more learning experiences outside the classroom, the Oxnard Union High School District has teamed with the Navy to create a pilot program for students interested in math and science.

The Pre-Engineering Academy Partnership, which began a three-month pilot program in March, offers students a chance to learn about careers in engineering.

Students receive 2 1/2 credits for the two hours they spend after school each week at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Port Hueneme. Volunteer engineers allow students to watch demonstrations, work with electronics and solve real engineering problems.

So far, program organizers have selected two students from each of the district’s five high schools, based on their background, interest, achievement and teacher recommendations.

The two agencies plan on evaluating the program to see if it is worth continuing next year.
