Sparks to Open Camp Today
The Sparks, minus stars Lisa Leslie and Haixia Zheng, begin preseason training camp today at Los Angeles Southwest College. The WNBA club’s 30-game season begins June 11 at Salt Lake City.
Leslie and Zheng are competing in the World Championships and won’t report to the Sparks until June 9. Mwadi Mabika, from the Congo, is also on her world championship team but doesn’t leave until mid-June.
“It’s not the best situation, but we’ll just have to do what we can to make sure the supporting cast is ready,” Coach Julie Rousseau said Monday.
Rousseau said the team’s two-a-day workouts will stress “discipline, conditioning and physical toughness” over the first two weeks.
“The players have just finished a six-week preseason conditioning program, so they’re prepared,” Rousseau said.
Training camp roster: Erin Alexander, Octavia Blue, Katrina Colleton, Tamecka Dixon, Allison Feaster, Curtycine Jones, Erika Kienast, Timicha Kirby, Mwadi Mabika, Pam McGee, Judy Mosley-McAfee, Eugenia Rycraw, Rehema Stephens, Penny Toler, Sandra VanEmbricqs and Jamila Wideman.
