Serrano Elementary Now a Cool School
Parents and students at Serrano Elementary School have endured “air-walks,” “jog-a-thons” and years of campaigning to raise enough money to air-condition the school.
They have now met their goal and may have inspired the Orange Unified School District to help other groups with their projects. On Monday, trustees voted unanimously to match the $20,000 raised by the Serrano PTA to buy air-conditioning for the school.
And they discussed a plan to establish a fund of up to $300,000 to match fund-raising efforts for large-scale projects at the other 36 schools in the district.
Specifics of the plan will be discussed at a later meeting, although a date has not been set.
Assistant Supt. David Perry said the Education Code allows such programs for capital projects that improve the school site, such as the installation of new technology, laboratories or the replacement of equipment.
