Town to Turn Cajun for 2-Day Festival
Ever wanted to watch a zydeco master bang out a tune on a washboard or tap your feet to the bayou-based rhythms of Acadian fiddlers? Or maybe gobble a plate of seafood jambalaya?
Come Memorial Day weekend, Simi Valley will be the place to do all that and more as the ninth annual Cajun-Creole Music Festival offers two days of music, dancing and food.
Beginning at 11 a.m. May 23 and continuing May 24 at the intersection of Tapo Canyon Road and Los Angeles Avenue, the festival will feature music from some of Louisiana’s finest, in addition to grills sizzling with Andouille sausage and alligator tail.
Lisa Haley, the “whirlin’ dervish of violin,” and her band the Zydecats, the Acadiana Cajun Band and Joe Simien, one of the foremost Cajun accordion players in the world, will entertain the more than 10,000 people expected at this year’s event.
The festival is the only major fund-raiser of the Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise.
Proceeds help a number of youth, homeless and seniors programs as well as the Police Department’s canine program and the Rotary Club’s worldwide humanitarian projects.
Tickets can be purchased in advance for $8 or for $10 at the gate. Children under 12 will be admitted free with a paying adult.
