School Districts Oppose Prop. 223
The North Orange County Community College District and the Fullerton School District this week took a stand against Proposition 223, the statewide ballot measure seeking to cap administrative expenses at 5% of each school district’s budget.
The fate of the so-called 95-5 initiative will be determined by voters June 2.
Trustees of the Fullerton School District voted 4-1, with Kim Ann Guth dissenting, to oppose the initiative. The majority of the board said that if the measure passes, the district might have to cut $1.9 million in administrative costs that would include accounting and facility maintenance personnel, bus mechanics, custodial supervisors, top administrators and human resources staffers.
The local teachers union and the majority of the other district unions in North Orange County also oppose the proposition, which was drafted by Los Angeles Unified School District teachers.
In other action this week, the college district also opposed Proposition 227, the initiative seeking to end bilingual education.
Those two measures and other propositions on the June ballot will be the topic for a discussion today at Cal State Fullerton. The free public session will begin at noon in Mackey Auditorium, 800 N. State College Blvd.
