El Modena Pulls Fast One on No. 3 Canyon, 13-3

Canyon’s regular season didn’t exactly end as the Comanches had planned as the third-ranked team in the county was stomped by El Modena, 13-3, Friday in a Century League game.

Visiting Canyon (21-5, 13-2) fell victim to Javier Vega’s home run to lead off the game, and it was downhill from there as the Vanguards (8-16, 5-10) got two doubles each from Mike Walters and Tony Calderon.

Brian Dane homered for Canyon, which had already clinched a playoff spot.

In another Century League game:

Santa Ana Valley 10, Foothill 9--Rollie Ramirez stole home with two outs in the sixth to lift Santa Ana Valley (11-15, 4-11). The Falcons scored six runs in that inning. Chris Briseno was four for four with four runs batted in for Santa Ana Valley. Reliever Ricky Noriega allowed two singles in five innings for Santa Ana Valley.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 9, Loara 3--Rob Crosta had three hits and earned a complete-game victory for visiting Cypress (16-10, 9-6) in the final regular season game for both teams. Loara is 13-12, 8-7.

El Dorado 8-6, Kennedy 6-7--Tyler Storrer and Mark Wade hit home runs in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, to help the Golden Hawks (12-9, 11-4) clinch the league title in the first game of a doubleheader against Kennedy (15-11, 8-7).

In the Freeway League:

Buena Park 1, Sonora 0--Daniel Flores pitched a four-hitter, striking out eight and walking only two. Bryan Cook knocked in the game’s only run with a single in the third, scoring Rudy Padilla. Buena Park is 9-15, 4-11; Sonora 9-16, 7-8.

Sunny Hills 8, Fullerton 3--Nathan Hochgesang had three hits, including a double, scored twice and drove in a run for host Sunny Hills (13-13, 8-7). George Seargent had two hits, including a triple, scored a run and had two RBIs.

Troy 13, No. 9 La Habra 3 (5 innings, mercy)--Jeff Ahlberg hit a grand slam in the fourth inning to help defeat league champion La Habra (18-7, 12-3). Ahlberg finished the day three for three with six RBIs and two runs scored for host Troy (8-17, 4-11).

In the Garden Grove League:

No. 1 La Quinta 8, Garden Grove 1--Jason Garcia (10-1) struck out six and didn’t walk anyone in a four-hitter for first-place La Quinta (26-1, 12-0). Garcia was three for four with three RBIs.

In the Olympic League:

Calvary Chapel 7, Orange Lutheran 1--Brett Young and Mike Molina combined for a one-hitter for visiting Calvary Chapel (19-5, 14-1).

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 10, Anaheim 0 (6 innings, mercy rule)--Right-hander Scott Davis threw a no-hitter with six strikeouts in six innings to help the Wildcats clinch the league championship.

Mike Ausman hit a home run with two on in the sixth inning and finished with five RBIs. Andy Drapkowski added three RBIs for Brea (17-8-1, 11-3-1).

Anaheim finishes league play at 5-10.

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 17, Newport Harbor 2--Mark Hatfield led the Sea Kings with two doubles and a home run. Corona del Mar (12-12, 5-10) had six players hit homers as the team ended the season with 44 total. The Sea Kings pounded out 17 hits against three Newport Harbor pitchers.

No. 4 Santa Margarita 5, El Toro 4--Andy Hopper helped the Eagles clinch the league championship with a single, a double and a solo home run. Hopper also scored twice.

Matt Vancoutren had a two-run single to put Santa Margarita (20-6, 12-3) ahead for good in the sixth inning. Randell Shelly was three for four with a double, and Tim Keef (8-3) pitched a four-hitter. Blair Lucas hit a homer in the third inning for the host Chargers (18-7, 9-6).

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 6, Mission Viejo 2--Jake Manning had three hits, including a home run and two RBIs, to help the Cougars (11-14, 7-8) earn a spot in the section playoffs as the league’s third-place team. Mission Viejo finishes 14-11, 6-9.

In the Sunset League:

Edison 8, Marina 7--Jeff Grady was three for four with four RBIs for Edison (18-8, 9-6). Glenn Hedgpeth (3-1) allowed three hits and struck out three in five innings. Edison (18-8, 9-6) finishes in second place in league.

Esperanza 9, Fountain Valley 4--Esperanza won its second consecutive league title. Matt Colin was two for three, including two homers, with three RBIs for Esperanza (17-7-1, 11-3-1). The Aztecs have won seven in a row.
