Pitcher Dave Stieb threw nine innings of seven-hit ball for triple-A Syracuse on Friday night, and the 41-year-old right-hander, trying to come back after nearly five years of being out of baseball, is about ready to return to Toronto.

The problem is that the Blue Jays have no room for him.

“He understands,” Toronto General Manager Gord Ash said. “I told him there is a possibility we could make a deal, or it’s possible one of the other clubs watching him could pick him up.”

Stieb’s arrangement with Toronto gives the club 48 hours to call him up after another team shows interest, or he’s free to sign elsewhere.
