MetroStars Top Depleted D.C.

Giovanni Savarese scored twice as the New York-New Jersey MetroStars stopped D.C. United’s winning streak at five games with a 4-3 victory Saturday in a Major League Soccer game before 15,322 at East Rutherford, N.J.

It was only the third loss in 12 games for the two-time MLS champions, who have 24 points and a nine-point lead over second-place Columbus in the Eastern Conference. The MetroStars (4-5), who built a 4-0 lead and hung on, had lost their previous two games.

United, missing U.S. national team players Jeff Agoos and Eddie Pope as well as injured Clint Peay, was further weakened 16 minutes into the game when Carlos Llamosa left because of a strained hamstring.

Chicago 2, Tampa Bay 1--Peter Nowak and Jerzy Podbrozny scored for the Fire (3-5), which ended a five-game losing streak before 6,391 at Tampa, Fla.

Nowak scored his first goal of the season by splitting two defenders and beating goalkeeper Thomas Ravelli from 10 yards out with 11:39 left for the game-winner.

Kansas City 3, New England 1--Digital Takawira scored three goals to lead the Wizards (3-6) to a victory over the Revolution (4-6) before 20,613 at Foxboro, Mass.

Dallas 2, Colorado 1--Dante Washington and Jason Kreis scored to lead the Burn (6-2) over the Rapids (3-7) before 15,280 at Dallas.

Both Dallas goals were the result of defensive mistakes by Colorado, which has yielded an MLS-high 26 goals in 10 games.

San Jose 2, Miami 0--Ronal Cerritos scored two goals and Andy Kirk turned in his first shutout as the Clash (4-6) beat the Fusion (5-5) at San Jose before 19,166.
