The Tehrani Treat

Quick rice to many of us used to mean Rice-a-Roni. These days, the flavored rice choices on supermarket shelves come from around the world. One of the best is Iranian by way of Los Angeles. Sadaf’s herb-flavored basmati rice, made by the Los Angeles company Soofer Inc., comes in several versions that match the flavors of many terrific Iranian dishes, including sabzi polo. The company also makes excellent heat-and-serve vegetarian stews to serve with the rice, including fesenjoon and gormeh sabzi. Proof that not all convenience food are bland and boring.

Rice mixes $1.79 and vegetarian stews $2.99 at Al-Tayebat Market, Anaheim; Elat Market, Los Angeles; Farmers Ranch Market, Van Nuys; Hawthorne Market, Torrance; Super Irvine, Irvine and Tehran Market, Santa Monica.
