Help Needed to Decorate Graves for Memorial Day

Share

Volunteers are needed early Monday to place crosses and flags on the graves of more than 3,000 military veterans buried at Loma Vista Memorial Park.

A Memorial Day ceremony will take place at the cemetery at 10 a.m. Firefighters in the armed forces will be saluted and Ronny J. Coleman, California fire marshal and chief deputy director of the state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, will be the featured speaker.

The annual event began in 1938 when C. Stanley Chapman, son of the city’s first mayor, began the tradition of placing a small white cross and an American flag at each veteran’s grave.
