Former All-County Linebacker to Coach Football at Orange

Kevin Capps has been named football coach at Orange High, Athletic Director Dave Zirkle said Wednesday.

Capps, 28, was a two-time all-county linebacker at La Habra who also played at Fullerton College and Sonoma State. He was an assistant coach at Sonoma State the last three years, but the school canceled its football program after last season. Capps will teach physical education at Orange.

Zirkle said he is quitting as girls’ tennis coach to spend more time with his new football staff. Zirkle also announced that softball and girls’ soccer Coach Rocky Parker is resigning for personal reasons and Michael Seltzer, boys’ and girls’ water polo coach and assistant swimming coach, is leaving to take a teaching job with the Anaheim Union High School District.

Randy Brouwer is leaving as Trabuco Hills High’s baseball coach after seven seasons, according to athletic administrator Steve Workman. Trabuco Hills was in the hunt for a playoff berth midway through the league season before losing its last six and finishing 12-13.

“He wanted to spend more time with his family,” Workman said. “It’s certainly his decision. We’re sorry to see him leave.”

Workman also announced that Curt Walker, Trabuco’s boys’ and girls’ volleyball coach, is quitting so he can try to become an NBA official.

As a tuneup for the Goodwill Games in New York, Erica Sorgi and Troy Dumais will be competing in the Southern California Invitational springboard and platform diving meet at Mission Viejo Aquatics Center. The meet begins Saturday and continues through Monday. The first event of each day begins at 9 a.m.

Cal State Fullerton has signed six women and two men to track and field scholarships. The women signees are jumper/sprinter Montiqua Sargent of Union City James Logan High, long jumper/sprinter Tosha Thomas of Bakersfield, jumper/sprinter Michelle Burk of King’s High in Edmonds, Wa., triple jumper Anna Doty of Merced, distance runner Teresa Vega of San Gorgonio and distance runner Jennifer Martin of Norco. The two men’s signees are middle distance runner Larry Leach of Fresno Bullard and Fresno College and sprinter Brandon Campbell of Cardinal Ritter in St. Louis. Campbell had earlier signed a basketball letter with the Titans.

Michele Bailon, a sophomore shortstop from Cypress College, has signed with Southwestern Louisiana. Bailon played high school softball at Santa Fe Springs St. Paul High.

Brandie Seligman, an All-Century League goalkeeper at Villa Park, has signed a letter of intent to play for women’s water polo at Queens College, her mother, Robin Seligman, said. Queens is an NCAA Division II school in Flushing, N.Y.

San Clemente’s Kelley Krueger is among three Triton players who have signed letters to play women’s basketball next season, Coach Mary Mulligan said Wednesday.

Krueger, a 5-foot-6 standout on defense, will attend San Francisco State.

Small forward Taryn Commins (5-10) has signed to play at Concordia.

Shooting guard Amanda Engle (5-5) will play at Pomona-Pitzer.
