White Outplays Piazza, Marlins

MIAMI — Probably since baseball’s first trade, players have talked about not holding grudges and about playing no harder against the team that traded them than against anybody else.
In contrast, there is Devon White, once a member of the Florida Marlins and now their nemesis.
White doubled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning Thursday and scored on Mike Piazza’s throwing error as Arizona beat the Marlins, 6-4, to complete a sweep of their two-game series.
White, traded last November as part of Florida’s salary purge, drove home two runs to help Arizona beat the Marlins for the sixth time in eight meetings.
“Things like that are going to happen when you play against the team that traded you,” said White, who is 11 for 35 with five RBIs and four stolen bases against Florida.
White won’t find many of his old teammates wearing Florida uniforms anymore. But he still harbors resentment about the way the team was broken up.
“It’s a new team. It’s not the Marlins I know,” he said. “It’s tough and disappointing. It’s a shame for fans and disappointing for baseball.”
Florida has lost four of five since the seven-player deal that brought Piazza and Todd Zeile from the Dodgers.
With the score tied, 4-4, Arizona’s Andy Fox reached leading off the seventh when a third strike from Vic Darensbourg (0-6) skipped past Piazza for a wild pitch. Jay Bell reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second base and scored on White’s double.
White took off for third on the next pitch, and Piazza’s throw sailed over the head of Zeile at third as White trotted home.
