NICE WORK

Calendar regularly features profiles and articles on interesting entertainment figures. Last Sunday’s issue, however, was better than usual thanks to the excellent writing skills of Lynell George and Ian Whitcomb.

I truly enjoyed George’s profile of Chris Cooper (“The Mild One”). It was a pleasure to learn about someone through such a nicely crafted piece of writing, with great phrases such as “emotionally buttoned-down” and “more an enveloping presence than an exploding nova.” George clearly really admires this guy, or is a terrific writer, or both. Most likely both.

Whitcomb’s “ ‘S Marvelous--the Music Lives On” was also a pleasure to read, a lovely triad of Gershwin history, great writing style and an insider’s knowledge of music. “Ira was a bookworm who ate dictionaries for breakfast,” “a characteristic Gershwin blue note on ‘day,’ but it’s supported by a nice chocolate chord. . . .” Very, very nice.
