Pepperdine, UCLA Men Win

ATHENS, Ga. — Pepperdine had singles wins by Patrick Gottesleben, Fernando Samayoa and Scott Willinsky and took the doubles point in beating USC, 4-2, Saturday in the first round of the NCAA men’s tennis tournament. The Waves advanced to a quarterfinal match against host Georgia, which beat Harvard, 4-0.
UCLA also won, dropping the doubles point to Texas, then getting singles victories from Jean-Noel Grinda, Vince Allegre, Jason Cook and Alex Decret in a 4-2 victory over the Longhorns to advance to a quarterfinal match with Stanford, a 4-0 winner over Minnesota.
In other matches, Auburn beat Illinois, 4-1; and Mississippi State beat South Carolina, 4-0.
Pepperdine (26-5) has won 10 consecutive matches and 15 of its last 16. Its lone loss had been to USC, on March 26.
