The city’s 1998-99 operating budget, to be unveiled Tuesday, includes spending for expanded city programs thanks in large part to a growing sales tax base, according to a city report.
The $12.4-million budget has grown by about 2% from last year; revenue includes $4 million in sales tax proceeds, an 8.1% increase over last year.
This year’s spending plan includes $227,000 for new and expanded programs, including reinstating the City Council barbecue for $9,000; an $11,000 grand opening ceremony this fall for the San Juan Capistrano Community Center; and doubling the city’s contract with the Chamber of Commerce--from $25,000 to $50,000--to provide visitor and tourism services.
Additionally, the city is proposing to increase spending for City Council and commission positions by $5,000. The city’s $3.1-million contract with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department is expected to increase by $246,000; and the city’s contract with the county for animal control will increase by $12,000.
The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at 32400 Paseo Adelanto. The budget presentation will be followed at later dates by two public hearings, culminating with a final vote July 7.
