Plan B

Plan B: When Plan A goes astray, here’s a list of nightspots located just around the corner or down the street from the clubs that have got you singing the not-on-the-guest-list blues:

Akbar, 4356 W. Sunset Blvd., Silver Lake, (213) 665-6810. When the Garage is filled with too many wannabes or Spaceland’s line is too long, check out Akbar, the kind of pub where everybody knows your name (even if it’s only for a night). 21 and over, no cover.

C Bar, 8442 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills, (213) 782-8157. If the Wilshire-located Conga Room and El Rey Theatre aren’t your style, the C Bar probably is. This intimate and good-natured caviar bar and restaurant lends some true class to Beverly Hills. 21 and over, no cover.

Coronet Pub, 370 N. La Cienega Blvd., L.A., (310) 659-4583. Don’t have enough juice to get into the Gate? This venerable bar has an open-door policy. 21 and over, no cover.

Jacks Sugar Shack, 1707 Vine St., Hollywood, (213) 466-7005. For those who drove into Hollywood unaware that the Palace’s weekend dance clubs catered to the kids (i.e., the 18 & over crowd), just a few doors down is Jacks--a comfortable hangout if there ever was one, catering to those with mature musical sensibilities. 21 and over, cover varies.

Lava Lounge, 1533 N. La Brea Ave., Hollywood, (213) 876-6612. Don’t want to do the “guest list” hustle at the Garden of Eden? Walk across the street to the Lava Lounge and have an explosively good tiki-time. 21 and over, cover varies.

The Lobby Table at the Mondrian Hotel, 8440 W. Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, (213) 650-8999. Sure, you can call up the Sky Bar and try to hype your position in Hollywood’s hierarchy for entry, or you can stroll into the Mondrian’s lobby, have a seat at the Table bar and ponder the real meaning of life. 21 and over, no cover.

360, 6290 W. Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, (213) 871-2995. Palladium security’s making you toss out that $20 lipstick in your pocket (those who go to concerts here may as well be entering Folsom Prison). Forget about it and head across the street to 360, where each cocktail comes with a view. 21 and over, no cover.

Union, 8210 W. Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, (213) 654-1001. Bar Marmont’s at capacity and Dublin’s Irish Whisky Pub’s making you wait so long your date’s copping a ‘tude? Walk on over to Union, where some variation of lounge culture’s sure to be happening. 21 and over, usually no cover.
