Runway to Reality

When Italian design duo Dolce & Gabbana showed butterflies in their spring and summer collection, the insects really took off. This outfit--a shirred silk chiffon gown (not a top) with a built-in corset over silver Capri pants--was one of the finale numbers at the Milan show.

According to our model, Marta, these butterfly creations are flying off the racks. After seeing the dress on the cover of the February issue of Elle, she ran to Bergdorf Goodman to get one. Salespeople told her, “Sorry, there is a waiting list.”

The original butterfly dress, which costs $2,500, and silver stretch pants, $310, are available at Shauna Stein and Maxfield in Los Angeles and Theodore in Beverly Hills. The Dolce & Gabbana red platform sandals are $325 and are available at Neiman Marcus and Theodore.

L.A. designer Maggie Barry also caught up with butterflies. Hers are hand-painted, made of feathers and sewn onto a shirred nylon netted camisole with spaghetti straps. They’re available for $235 exclusively at H. Lorenzo at Sunset Plaza. The silver stretch pants, $42, and butterfly hair clips, $6.50, are available at area Contempo Casuals. The red platform sandals are by Unisa, $44.99, and available at Bloomingdale’s.
