Four teachers at Canoga Park Elementary School were honored Thursday by the city of Los Angeles for outstanding work in an after-school reading program.

First-grade teachers Grace Hernandez, Hilda Marino, Lisa Cespedes and Jovita de Guia received certificates from Councilwoman Laura Chick as part of Special Teachers Recognition Day for their involvement in the Rolling Readers volunteer tutoring program.

Under the program, implemented in partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District, teachers and volunteers tutored each participating student 15 minutes a day, four days per week, said Lorraine Mariglia, principal at Canoga Park Elementary.

“They are outstanding teachers and this is a wonderful form of recognition for them,” Mariglia said. “With the extra hours they’ve put in, they have gone above and beyond the call of duty.”

Hernandez said: “I love children and, although it’s an old cliche, I want to make a difference.”

Betty Wexler, community recruitment and outreach director of the San Fernando Valley chapter of Rolling Readers USA, said the reading program will be implemented at Fullbright Avenue Elementary School in Canoga Park, Roscoe Elementary School in Sun Valley and Dyer Street Elementary School in Sylmar in the fall.
