Town Isn’t Big Enough for Two Strawberries

The Garden Grove Historical Society can apparently call its driveway Strawberry Lane forever.

The name, proposed by a developer for use in a new 10-home central Garden Grove neighborhood, was denied by City Council members Tuesday after the historical society’s president reminded them the name was already taken.

“It’s not really a street, but the historical society has a street sign called Strawberry Lane and they didn’t want the use of the name anywhere else,” Matt Fertal, redevelopment agency director, said. “The council was willing to accommodate them.”

Fertal said the new street, built by La Quinta Homes, will be renamed by the developer.

“They thought it was a great way to bring recognition to the past of Garden Grove, but the name was already claimed,” he said.

Garden Grove was once home to hundreds of acres of strawberry fields and continues to celebrate its history every Memorial Day weekend with a three-day Strawberry Festival.
