A young child was being treated late Saturday at Children’s Hospital of Orange County after nearly drowning at a Rancho Santa Margarita community pool.

About 12 adults and 40 children were celebrating at the pool after a Little League game when the child was found submerged in the pool.

Lifeguards, with the assistance of two nurses who happened to be present, performed CPR. When paramedics arrived, the child had labored breathing and was semiconscious. The child was taken to Children’s Hospital at Mission in Mission Viejo in critical condition, Fire Authority Capt. Scott Brown said.

The child was later transferred to CHOC in Orange. The parents asked that no information about the child’s condition be released, according to hospital officials.

The accident underscores the sometimes tragic combination of young children and swimming pools, Brown said.

Brown said parents can get information about free CPR classes and a drowning prevention program by contacting the Fire Authority at (714) 744-0496.
