TV Land Spread Features Other White Meat--Arnold

The sequel to his Oscar-nominated movie due out Nov. 25, Babe is getting a lot of attention. But TV Land doesn’t want you to forget about that other incredibly talented pig--the one from Hooterville.

So the cable station is showing four Arnold Ziffel-related “Green Acres” episodes Nov. 21 starting at 3 p.m. (repeated Nov. 22 at 7 a.m.).

The tribute--in which Arnold finds love, fame and fortune--begins with “Love Comes to Arnold Ziffel.” But there’s trouble with the relationship: Fred Ziffel doesn’t approve of the affair between Arnold and Cynthia--a basset hound--because of her father, Mr. Haney.

Next is the two-part “A Star Named Arnold Is Born.” After getting fabulous reviews (in the Pixley Press and Crabwell Corners Courier) for starring as a police dog in the community production of “Who Killed Jock Robin,” Arnold gets a starring role in a Hollywood picture.

In the last episode of the tribute, Arnold hides out at Lisa and Oliver’s farm after inheriting a fortune from a meat-packing tycoon. Everybody wants money from Arnold, says Mr. Ziffel, including “a blond woman who claimed to be Arnold’s wife.” This is no vacation, though. Mr. Ziffel demands that Arnold practice the piano two hours a day for his Boston Symphony debut.

A while back, in a story about my dream TV station, I asked readers to tell me what they would put on their own.

Reader Colin Kingston of Ontario had the same problem with his schedule that I had with mine: “Too many shows and not enough time slots.”

Kingston had some of the shows on JTV’s lineup, including “The Wonderful World of Disney,” “The Rockford Files” and “Barney Miller.” But his station would also include “The Jack Benny Program,” “Star Trek,” “Kolchak: The Night Stalker,” “The Flip Wilson Show,” “The Flintstones,” “The Adventures of Superman,” “The Carol Burnett Show,” “The Avengers” and “Hill Street Blues.”

JTV’s schedule had many of the favorites of Mary Echevarria of Stafford, Va., but missing from it were “Wanted: Dead or Alive,” “The Rebel,” “My Favorite Martian,” “The Loretta Young Show,” “Banacek,” “Vega$,” “The Streets of San Francisco,” and “Your Show of Shows.”

Megan Reilly of Garden Grove called hers the Short-Lived Show Station, where canceled series would get another chance to be seen. Among the shows: “Voyagers,” “The Greatest American Hero” “Sledge Hammer!,” “Max Headroom,” “Probe,” “Tales of the Gold Monkey,” “V,” “The Charmings,” “Second Chance” and a post-apocalyptic comedy called “Woops!”

Comings and Goings

Forget tuning in to see “Bonanza” weekend afternoons on KPXN Channel 30. The Pax-TV network has replaced it with infomercials indefinitely. “Hogan’s Heroes” and “WKRP in Cincinnati” are back on KDOC Channel 56, but “Cannon” is gone. “Hogan’s Heroes” is on weekdays at 3 p.m., followed by “WKRP.” “Matlock” moves to 4 p.m.

Set Your VCR

Robert Taylor, the pretty boy who played opposite Garbo in “Camille” in the ‘30s but later turned to tough-guy roles, didn’t do a lot of TV, but he did star in “The Detectives.” TV Land is showing half-hour episodes from the 1959-62 series (in its last season it was an hour) in its Crimestoppers block this month, weekends at 1 p.m. (the Sunday episode has a repeat later, at 9 p.m.)

Taylor, who did only a handful of TV guest roles, can also be seen in the first two episodes of the western “Hondo” (Saturday and Nov. 14 at 7 a.m. on TNT) from 1967, two years before he died. (The “man with the perfect profile” wasn’t born with such a handsome name--Spangler Arlington Brugh.)

* The first “Odd Couple” will air Tuesday at 2 p.m. on Comedy Central, but to see how Oscar and Felix met, you have to watch the flashback episode “The Jury Story” (Nov. 16 at 2 p.m.), a sort of twisted “12 Angry Men.”

* Drew Barrymore, Marie Osmond and Eric Sevareid on the same bill? In 1982 they all joined in the festivities in “EPCOT Center: the Opening Celebration” on “Walt Disney Presents,” (Wednesday at 11:20 p.m. on the Disney Channel).

* Nickelodeon will honor “Rugrats” with a 24-hour marathon beginning Nov. 18 at 6 a.m.

* Frasier week is wrapping up on KTLA Channel 5, which is scheduling theme weeks this month on “Cheers” (Mondays through Fridays at 11 p.m.). Next week it’s Norm’s turn, followed by Rebecca’s, then Woody’s.

Holiday Watch

The Clampetts spend Thanksgiving in Hooterville with their “Petticoat Junction” and “Green Acres” pals on “The Beverly Hillbillies” (Nov. 25 at 5:30 a.m. on TBS), from 1968.

Comedy Central offers less traditional holiday fare with “Thanksgiving With the Mayflower Madam,” a skit from the 1986-87 season of “Saturday Night Live” (Nov. 26 at 11 a.m. and midnight).
