Cabrillo Music Theater will open a new performance season Friday with the behind-the-scenes show business musical “Gypsy” at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza Kavli Theatre. The production has traditionally been considered a star vehicle since 1959 when Ethel Merman first wowed Broadway audiences as Mama Rose. The show was revived with Angela Lansbury in 1973 and Tyne Daly in 1989, both of whom won Tonys for the part. Cabrillo’s rendition stars Ilene Graff as Mama Rose, the driven stage mother who pushes her two daughters to perform in vaudeville. The production features memorable songs by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim.
